Let’s Talk Food

As I’m getting ready to wrap up this round of Whole 30, only 5 days left, I’ve found some amazing new food items and recipes. My first round was in the winter so I was cooking in the house a lot using the oven to bake and roast things. Where as it being the heart of the summer the last thing I want to do is turn on the oven, and let’s not even mention that my oven is tiny, as in I refer to it as the Easy-Bake-Oven. So, with this I’ve been relying a lot on the grill and if it’s raining the trusty grill pan.

I don’t eat red meat so I’ve been eating lots of chicken and turkey. With this I’ve been doing all sorts of different seasonings with it and adding it to different things. I’ve been throwing leftovers into the frying pan in the morning and eating it as part of my breakfast or throwing it on top of my salad for lunch or dinner.

I’ve been eating zoodles like crazy. I love them!!!! I’ve done them with a tomato sauce, an avocado pesto sauce that was to die for, and was amazing both warm and cold, and even a cauliflower Alfredo sauce. I’ll link the recipes for both at the end.

With these new recipes I’ve been trying I found that I needed to try some new ingredients that I hadn’t before. To make the pesto I needed nutritional yeast. I had no idea what it was or even where to find it. Whole Foods to the rescue. As you’ll see if you check out the cauliflower Alfredo recipe it calls for Parmesan cheese however, that’s a no go on the Whole 30 so I substituted the nutritional yeast for the Parmesan. Would I much rather have Parmesan cheese you bet but it was still tasty with this substitution, absolutely.

Along with nutritional yeast I discovered some new chicken sausages. Aidells has always been a go to for sausage when on Whole 30 as their chicken Apple sausages are compliant. I haven’t been able to find them recently here so I was a bit bummed.

There must be a whole lot of Whole 30ers out there buying up the supply.

However, I have found a brand that I love even more. And, not only that but they have several flavors that are compliant. And, when I say they are delicious I mean they are delicious. I could eat them every day I don’t but I could. The brand is Bilinski’s and I’ve found them at Whole Foods.

I’ve tried 3 flavors so far that are compliant and am in love with them. I’ve tried the:

  • cilantro lime = to die for
  • Mild Italian = was wonderful in sausage peppers and onion
  • Sweet Apple = delicious and perfect for anytime including breakfast

There are several other flavors that I can’t wait to try after I go through reintroduction as some have added sugar, wine, or cheese. So after seeing how certain foods affect me I’ll be trying other flavors.

I am definitely going to be very mindful of what I’m eating after I complete this Whole 30 and reintroduction phase and not go crazy like I did after the last time I did this. I know for a fact sugar is a trigger food for me one that comes with no brakes and I need to stay away from it. A little here and there, as in measured out and a once in a while thing I think will be able to handle. Of course if I see myself getting out of control I’ll put myself back on the Whole 30 plan again, or well a Whole 7 to get myself back on track. And, of course I also know that junk food is a no breaks type of food for me, chips, dips, French fries, and the like. Again once in a while at a party/BBQ once in a while I think I can handle but they will not be in the house as I’ll just grab them and eat the whole bag.

I’m glad I know this about myself and am making a concious decision to stay away/limit these items from my life. I haven’t missed them in the last 25 days so I know I can live without them.

I am interested to see how some of the other foods I’ll try reintroducing will affect me and what if anything else I need to cut out of my diet, not because they are no brakes type food, but simply because my body just doesn’t care for them. I have 6, well 5, foodtypes that I’ll be reintroducing. I’ve decided to split up cheese from dairy to see if I can handle cheese but not dairy, vice versa, or neither. Rice, beans, corn, and gluten-free grains will be the other foods I’ll be reintroducing.

I’ve also planned this Whole 30 perfectly as my reintroduction phase will take about 2.5 weeks, and will be done with that part of the Whole 30 on the 22nd of August. My birthday is the 26th as well as the day my husband comes home!!! So I’ll be able to celebrate both occasions and know what foods I can enjoy without negative effects on my body.

I’m definitely taking control of my life and health and will be sticking to these eating habits this time. I know that I’ll fall off the wagon from time to time because well I’m human and some days I’m going to succumb to temptations of bad food choices, because some days I may just need some chocolate or ice cream or cake or chips or what have you and convienence of a packaged meal, but when I do I’ll brush myself off and do a Whole 7 to get myself back on track.

Here’s the recipes if you’re interested in trying them:

But, I’m off to enjoy the nice day and wishing you all a wonderful day.

Fitness Trackers

So, as you may know if you’ve been following this blog for a while I had a Fitbit. And, to say I was addicted to it was a bit of an understatement.

However, I’ve moved on. Sorry Fitbit but I found a new fitness device.

About a month ago I purchased the Garmin Vivoactive and well let me just say I love it.

Here it is on my wrist. People think it’s an Apple Watch all of the time. And, I sure did want the Apple Watch for a bit but then I looked at the limitations. You can’t get it wet and needs to be charged daily. Well great that’s just not working so well for me.

Shortly after getting my Fitbit Garmin had released there first Vivo tracker. And, I was like Doh! It has some features that the Fitbit didn’t have. But, I had just purchased the Fitbit and stuck with it. And, like I said I was fitbitten, I was addicted to the thing.

However, I am in love with my vivoactive. The charge lasts anywhere from 7-10 days you can get it wet and has lots of cool features.

Let’s talk about some of my favorite features.

  • The move bar. I love this feature that Garmin has incorporated into their trackers. This was one of the things I loved about them. It reminds you to get up and move if you’ve been sedentary for to long.
  • Tracks multiple activities
  1. Running
  2. Walking
  3. Cycling
  4. Swimming
  5. Indoor treadmill running
  6. Indoor treadmill walking
  7. Indoor cycling
  • It adjusts your daily step goal based on what you’ve done in the past so it pushes you a little bit further every day.
  • There are also other apps that you can download to measure other activities such as downhill skiing, rowing, and even sailing. I’m excited to try out the skiing one this winter.
  • You can download widgets to give you weather information, calendar, timers, and even stock information.
  • They have plenty of data fields to help track your progress from heart rate charts, to cadence, speed, and elevation.
  • And, hey if you don’t like the watch face you have you can change it. There are tons of different faces to choose from. I have one that is great to show my fitness info but I also have another face that’s plain so that I can change it so it looks a little less fitness tracker like.
  • Also there are multiple band colors you can get. I have the white and also a pink band that I have yet to try. They also have leather straps so it can look a bit nicer. I haven’t bought one yet because well I’d ruin it. I didn’t get t for fashion reasons but to track activity.
  • The one thing that this is missing is the heart rate monitoring on the wrist. But, it’s not that big of a deal. You can purchase the chest strap heart rate monitor. And, well I was pretty sure I’d hate it, but I purchased the comfort fit monitor and I don’t even realize that it is on. And, it reads my heart rate continuously unlike the wrist tracking ones do.
  • So yeah I’m loving this product. I’m so happy with this purchase.
  • Oh and you can also do some fun things with the vivoactive. I have an app that finds my car, I used this at concert it’s amazing, and another favorite app is heavenward where it’ll show me the constellations and planets over head of me right this second.

So if you’re looking for a fitness tracker with a little bit more I highly recommend the Garmin vivoactive.

Nice Day For A RidE

Right before the husband left for work we bought a bike for me. However, it has been sitting in the garage not getting any use as I was working on the house. Well the house is done, and I didn’t have a job scheduled for today.

So today was the day that I finally took it out for a serious spin. The day we brought the bike home I did do a quick trip around the block.

We are really fortunate to live right on a gorgeous bike path. I mean it’s basically out my front door. Okay I do have to cross the street to get on it, but it’s right here. The path takes you into the state park that is about a mile and a half from the house and loops all through the park.

Being as today was my first time riding the bike I decided I do a 30 minute ride. I’d see how far I made it in 15 minutes and then turn back.

I am happy to report I made it into the park and rode about a half a mile through the park and then turned back to head home.

It was a really nice ride. It’s wooded so pretty shady and cool and the bugs weren’t even bad. Which is a good thing since I completely forgot to douse myself in bug spray before I left.

The only part about the entire ride is that the path crosses a major road so it’s a bit like playing Frogger at that point. I wish they would put in a crosswalk light in that area. I think it would be a little bit safer, but I just sat and waited for a time when it was exceptionally clear and crossed the road.

One thing I figured out very quickly on my ride. I hate my bicycle seat. It’s super hard and very uncomfortable. I’m either going to get used to it or I’ll be looking for something new in the future.

There’s my stats for this ride. Hey it’s my first time riding a bike in I don’t even know how long and it was just a cruise I wasn’t out to break any records. Oh and my bike is a beach cruiser. So yeah not a bike designed to be ridden hard or fast. But, hey I still got in a nice little workout and enjoyed the outdoors.

Next time I’ll even wear the heart rate monitor to see how I’m really doing.

This morning I did my first Cize workout. I did Crazy 8’s.

It was so much fun. 30 minutes of dancing and breaking a sweat.

I had watched the video on Saturday so that I would have an idea of what was expected and well I’m not going to lie. I thought oh this will be easy I’ve got this.

Hahahaha silly girl that I am. It’s a lot more moving and exertion than I thought it would be. I was sweating in the first 5 minutes. By the time the water break came I was more than ready for it.

My next round I’ll be wearing my heart rate monitor to see how many calories I burn in just 30 minutes.

I enjoyed every minute of the workout, and I wasn’t counting down the seconds till it was over. I was a little bummed when the workout was over. I had a lot of fun, and can’t wait for the next round.

Cize, it’s not called the end of exercise for nothing.

Even if you have no rhythm or think you can’t dance you need to check this out. It’s broken down to super easy steps and just continues to build on. I’ll be perfecting the moves over the next couple of days and can’t wait to see my improvements.

I love exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise.

Chores Done

This week I’ve been working and so the household chores kind of fell by the wayside not to mention all of the errands that needed to be done.

So today was catch up day. I dropped off a car load of items to GoodWill. Did the grocery shopping. Whooooo I have fresh fruit and veggies for another week.

After that I came home started laundry, cleaned bathrooms, the kitchen, and then did the painstaking chore of cleaning up dog hair. It never ends in this house. I would have to sweep all day every day to keep up with it. It’s the end of July I don’t understand how they can be possibly shedding this much still. I mean I clean up enough hair every day to make a new dog. Seriously, the shedding can stop anytime. Next dog will be a non-shedding one.

Of course the dog hair free floors was short lived. As in as soon as they came in I was cleaning up more dog hair. Oh well guess I’m getting some arm work in with all of the sweeping/dust mopping/vacuuming I am doing.

Now I’m going to enjoy the rest of this gorgeous day outside playing ball with those shedding beasts of mine and enjoying the sunshine.

Today is Day 20!!!! What!!!! I can’t believe that I’m 2/3 of the way through this round of Whole 30. It has been going so fast, and it’s definitely from all of the support and encouragement from the Facebook group I’m part of.

So I’m more than half way done, I’m in the home stretch now, 10 days left, a week and a half.

I’m a little nervous about the ending. I’ve been thinking about reintroduction and what foods I want to reintroduce and those I don’t. I know that gluten won’t be introduced at all so that’s one thing I don’t have to worry about. I definitely want to try cheese because well I love cheese and it is nice to have every once in a while. I plan on trying cheese and then going back back to Whole 30 for 2 days to see how my body reacts to it and then I’ll try dairy in other forms than cheese. Also I want to reintroduce rice and then later beans mainly chick peas since I love hummus. As for other beans I could care less. And, lastly I’ll be reintroducing corn, I don’t think I have an issue with corn but it’ll be good to really test it out and see for sure. With all of the items I want to reintroduce it will take about 2 weeks to do it right which works out perfect because by the time I’m done with the Whole 30 and my entire reintroduction phase the husband will be coming home and it’ll also be my birthday, so it works out perfectly.

I know that this is the way for me to eat from now on and I need to stick with it and not fall off the wagon like I did last time.

I feel better, my clothes are fitting better, and my skin is clearing up. It’ll be interesting to see what if any foods that I reintroduce have an effect on me. And, I am also interested to see how much if any weight I’ve lost.

Clean whole food is the way to go and it’s not that hard to stick to it. Of course when the husband comes home I will have to plan meals a bit more in advance, but that’s okay it’ll all work out.

Oh and today I watched Cize Crazy 8’s. I always watch the video before I do it so that I have somewhat of an idea what I’m in for. I am so excited for this. It is going to be so much fun. And, I’ll definitely be breaking a sweat by the time the workout is over.  I’m stoked. Thank you Shaun T for another amazing program!!!

Bento Box

Today I got called into work for a full day, so it was pack a lunch time. I’m in love with Bento Boxes. They are perfect for packing my Whole 30 meals. I packed a salad, grilled chicken, dressing, and a plout. It all fit perfectly into my little Bento lunchbox.

I have a couple of different ones. Today I used the one on the top right corner, mine however is green not pink.

Here’s my salad

I also have this set that comes with a cooler bag.

But, my new want is a stainless steel one. Planetbox makes an awesome one, but they are quite expensive.

This is the one I really want perfect for my entire meal. I’m keeping an eye out for it to go down in price and then I’m jumping on it.

What about you what is your favorite way to pack your lunch?
